Liyana Fizi

Liyana Fizi (born 14 September 1983)[1] is a Malaysian singer, musician, songwriter, composer and producer.[2] She is a former lead singer of the Malaysian jazz band Estrella. She started playing indie music in 2006 and earned eight nominations in the Voize Independent Music Awards in 2008.[3][4][5]

In this Malay name, the name Fizi is a patronymic, not a family name, and the person should be referred to by the given name, Liyana.

As a solo artist she launched her debut album, Between the Lines, in September 2011. The album contains 10 songs, including songs composed by Liyana herself.[3] The album was released under her own label, Liyana Fizi Music Publishing, and produced by Soundscape Records. One of the songs, "Jatuh", was featured in the soundtrack of Azura, a movie directed by Aziz M. Osman.[6]

Early life

Liyana was born on 14 September 1983 at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital. She has an older brother, Wafi, and a younger brother, Aqil, who has Down syndrome.[7] The family lived for a while in Brunei when Liyana was a small child but later moved to Shah Alam, where she grew up.[3]

Liyana's grandmother hails from Negeri Sembilan and has Jakun, Javanese, and Chinese heritage, while her step-grandfather is from Malacca. Her grandmother had previously been married to a Dutchman, Peter Polderman, who is Liyana's biological grandfather. Her father is from Kedah, and has Siam, Mamak, and Arab ancestry.[3]

Her mother studied at Universiti Teknologi MARA. Liyana studied at a private college in Subang.[8]

Career

Estrella

Liyana was one of the members of the Malaysian Jazz band, Estrella during its formation in 2006 where she was the lead vocalist and guitarist along with Jeffrey Little (drums, percussion), Ariff Zahidee (bass), and Shamsul Idzhar (guitar). The band's debut eponymous studio album was released on 28 December 2007 under Laguna Records (now Laguna Music). The songs "Stay", "Ternyata", and "Take it Slow" were released as singles with music videos. Liyana left the band after her contract with the band and the label ended. Since then, she started performing solo.[9]

Solo career

After Estrella was disbanded in 2010, Liyana decided to continue her solo career and set up her own company, Liyana Fizi Music Publishing in early 2011. In September of that year, her first solo album Between the Lines was launched with "Light Writing" as its first single.[10]

Other appearances

Liyana appears in a Malaysian musical comedy film Kami Histeria (2014) as the cameo appearances.[11]

Personal life

Liyana married Firdaus Karim, a photographer, on 30 September 2013.[12]
