List of current champions in New Japan Pro-Wrestling
New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) is a professional wrestling promotion based in Nakano, Tokyo. Title reigns are either determined by professional wrestling matches or are awarded to a wrestler, as a result of the culmination of various scripted storylines. There are five active singles championships, two active tag team championships, and one active six-man tag team championship. Six of the eight championships carry the letters "IWGP", after NJPW's governing body, International Wrestling Grand Prix. 12 wrestlers hold the championships. The list includes the number of times the wrestler has held the title, the date and location of the win, and a description of the winning bout. The following is correct as of August 14, 2020.
Current championships
At the top of NJPW's championship hierarchy is the IWGP Heavyweight Championship, held by Evil, who is in his first reign. Evil defeated Tetsuya Naito on July 12, 2020 at Dominion in Osaka-jo Hall.
There are three secondary titles in NJPW, the IWGP Intercontinental Championship, the IWGP United States Championship and the NEVER Openweight Championship.
- The IWGP Intercontinental Championship, held by Evil, who is in his first reign. Evil defeated Tetsuya Naito on July 12, 2020 at Dominion in Osaka-jo Hall.
- The IWGP United States Championship is held by Jon Moxley who is in his second reign. Moxley defeated Lance Archer to win the title on January 4, 2020, at Wrestle Kingdom 14.[1]
- The NEVER Openweight Championship is held by Shingo Takagi, who is in his first reign. Takagi defeated Hirooki Goto on February 1, 2020 at The New Beginning in Sapporo.[2]
- The IWGP Tag Team Championship is held by Dangerous Tekkers (Taichi and Zack Sabre Jr.) who are in their first reign as a team. They won the titles by defeating previous champions Golden☆Ace (Kota Ibushi and Hiroshi Tanahashi) on July 12, 2020 at Dominion in Osaka-jo Hall.
There are also two junior heavyweight championships in NJPW.
- The IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship is held by Hiromu Takahashi, who is in his third reign. Takahashi defeated Will Ospreay on January 4, 2020 at Wrestle Kingdom 14.[1]
- The IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship is held by Roppongi 3k, (Yoh and Sho), who are in their fourth reign as champions. They won the titles by defeating previous champions, Bullet Club (Taiji Ishimori and El Phantasmo) on January 5, 2020 at Wrestle Kingdom 14.[1]
The NEVER Openweight 6-Man Tag Team Championship is held by Chaos (Tomohiro Ishii, YOSHI-HASHI, and Hirooki Goto) who are in their first reign as a team. They won the titles by defeating Kazuchika Okada, SHO, and Toru Yano, on August 9, 2020, at Summer Struggle in Tokyo.[1]
