Overview

NFTA Metro carried many of its present route numbers and names from the previous International Railway Company routes. Otherwise, much of the routing follows (loosely) the following number schematic:

• 1-49 City of Buffalo and Erie County routes
• 50-57 City of Niagara Falls and Niagara County routes
• 60-81 Express routes from Downtown Buffalo
• 90-97 Special event routes
• 101-118 School bus routes
• 200-216 Metrolink routes

As of June 19, 2016, route no longer services Kenmore and Military; instead, it services Vulcan Loop, previously served by route 5 and 35 buses after those routes began servicing the new Black Rock/Riverside Transit Hub in December 2015. As of September 4, 2016, some trips have been added to serve Charter School for Applied Technologies.

8 A	Main	CS	Marine Drive University Station	As of October 31, 2010, route no longer services Michigan Avenue, nor does it service Main/Bailey Loop. As of June 21, 2015, route will operate as follows: Outbound, regular route to Wilkeson and Erie, right Erie, left Marine Drive and continue regular route. As of March 16, 2020, route changed to add weekend service to the Buffalo-Niagara Medical Campus to alleviate pressure off route 14 and route 16 buses. As such, route no longer services Goodell Street; additionally, bus stops at both Goodell Street and Main Street and Main Street and Virginia Street permanently discontinued. Instead, route will operate as follows: Outbound, regular route to Ellicott and Goodell, continue Ellicott, left Carlton, right Main and continue regular route.

As of September 19, 2016, bus stop at Niagara Falls Boulevard and Treadwell Road permanently discontinued, while bus stop previously north of mall entrance near T.G.I.Friday's has been permanently moved to north of the previous site of Sears. Outbound buses now enter the Boulevard Mall via Almeda Avenue near Chili's; inbound buses enter as usual, but turn right upon entering mall instead of left behind M&T Bank. As of March 8, 2020, Saturday and Sunday service permanently extended; last Saturday outbound bus leaves University Station at 10:30 pm, last Sunday inbound bus leaves Audubon at 9:43 pm, last outbound bus leaves University Station at 9:55 pm.

17	Central Terminal	Downtown (Hotels) Buffalo Central Terminal	Service continued until 1980s with some service on route 4C, operating Fillmore Avenue, Paderewski Drive and Memorial Drive, before returning onto Broadway.
17	Kensington-Suburban		Created on June 23, 1985. Service eliminated on March 27, 1994, with some service on route 32 serving Union Road from Wehrle Drive to Walden Galleria Mall and Thruway Mall via Union Road, some service on route 49 replacing service on Hopkins Road, Sheridan Drive, Transit Road and Maple Road and some service route 30 replacing service on Wehrle Drive, through Erie Community College North Campus and Aero Drive.
20 E	Late Night Express	Downtown (Delaware & West Chippewa) Delavan/Canisius College Station	Short-lived shuttle service between Canisius College, Medaille College, Buffalo State College and the Chippewa Entertainment District. Service originally operated weekends, then reduced to Thursday nights only before being eliminated entirely due to low ridership and budget cuts.
21	Michigan/Forest	Downtown Main & Michigan (Cold Spring Garage) Main & Delavan (Delavan/Canisius College) Forest & Niagara	Service eliminated on March 24, 1993, with some service on route 8B serving Michigan Avenue from Best Street to William Street to ease pressure off route 8A service to and from Downtown Buffalo; service on route 8B eliminated on October 31, 2010, with portion of route 8B service replaced with portions of routes 14 and 16 as of March 8, 2020.

29 A	Wohlers	Niagara (Maryland Street and Efner Street) Delavan/Canisius College Station	As of June 19, 2016, route changed to move service over Main Street; due to construction of the new School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences medical school that has since been completed, route no longer services Washington Street between High Street and Virginia Street; as such, inbound passengers who wish to access Allen/Medical Campus Station will be required to deboard across from the station at Main and Allen Streets. Also, outbound trips no longer service Riley Street or Northampton Street. Service discontinued May 24, 2020 due to the impact of COVID-19 to NFTA operations.[1]
