Early life

Alicia (Lisa) was born in Kingston, Jamaica. Estranged from her mother, she was raised by her father who died when she was 16 years old. She later relocated to London in 2002.

Career

Mercedez's career started in 2005, when she was introduced to Stylo G with whom she later collaborated in under the Stylo G led group 'Warning Crew' becoming the first and only female member.[1][2][3] She coined her stage name 'Lisa Mercedez' as a tribute to her father, who was obsessed with his old Mercedes-Benz W201.[4]

Mercedez moved on to become a solo artist and debuted with her first single 'Lets Get Drunk' in 2014[5] which was produced by DJ S.K.T. She took a hiatus from music before releasing numerous singles and her first mixtape BGC in 2017.[1][6]

In February 2018, it was revealed that Mercedez would be one of only three women to perform at Wireless Festival in 2018. This caused controversy, leading to artist Lily Allen and DJ Annie Mac criticising the festival for its lack of diversity.[7][8] Mercedez commented on the subject that "As a woman we have to work ten times as hard as the guys to make it".[9]

Personal life

On 3 March 2020 she announced her reversion to Islam on Instagram. The singer received death threats as she planned to continue her dancehall career.[10]

gollark: I consider it annoying political advertising (especially when that bug made it uncloseable) and don't like it.
gollark: > I think, ultimately, you're using their service so they can do what they like<@229987409977278464> They *can*, but I don't *want* them to in all cases.
gollark: It's not the first thing to pop up there, they mostly use it to notify me about updates and such (useful) and bother me about the desktop app (not useful!).
gollark: > Starting next week, we’ll begin to use our in-product screens and our blog to raise awareness of anti-racist causes and encourage you to take concrete action, such as calling on local officials to advocate for police reform.> in-product screens
gollark: You don't know that. And the bit I quoted seems to contradict it.
