Lempo (producer)

Lempo (also frequently known as Mike McGuinness) is a British DJ and music producer. He is known for his collaborations with well-known artists such as Nancy Sinatra, Roland Clark, Princess Superstar, and many others. McGuinness is also the founder of the Applique Music record label, Eivissa Partido event and Twisted Melon radio show.[1][2][3][4][5]

Early life

Lempo is a resident of Knutsford, Cheshire. He attended the University of Salford and graduated with Bachelor's of Arts in Graphic Design. In 2018, he underwent a critical operation for a heart condition that could have proven to be fatal.[2][6][4][5]

Career

DJ Lempo

Lempo's music career began in 2006 when he was resident DJ at Manchester nightclubs, Sankeys and Venus. He has also performed for international club brands Ministry of Sound, Cream, Pacha Group, and The Warehouse Project.[7][8][9][3][10][11][12][4][5]

He is recognised for his annual May Day party 'Eivissa Partido', held at Marstons pub 'The Legh Arms' in Knutsford. He started organizing this event in 2014. Headline artists have included Judge Jules, Phats & Small, K-Klass, Marshall Jefferson, and Brandon Block.[1][13][14][7][4][5]

Lempo performed for Parklife Festival in Manchester from 2012 to 2016. He also featured at Mint Festival in Leeds between 2012 and 2014.[7][5][15][16]

As a producer, Lempo has remixed Snoop Dogg's 'Let Me Hit It' on Docka Records in 2017, General Levy's 'Move' on Big Mix Up Records in 2017 and Dawn Penn's 'No No No' on Big Mix Up Records in 2019. He has released original music with labels including Strictly Rhythm, Trax Records, Todd Terry's InHouse Records, and CR2 Records.[7][9][5][15][16][17][18][19]

Lempo collaborated with Nancy Sinatra on the single 'Jack In Boots' in 2012, K-Klass on 'Brass Attack' in 2013, Ashley Taylor Dawson and Mark Hill on 'Playboy Bunny' in 2014. He has also collaborated with other artists including MC Flipside, Roland Clark, Ruff Diamond and Princess Superstar.[6][7][9][5][15][16][17][18][19]

Lempo's catalogue has featured on broadcasting networks Channel 4 (UK), The X-Factor (Australia), and Disney XD (USA).[18][19] He founded his own record label, Applique Music in July 2011, the labels catalogue includes music by artists such as Ben Pearce, Todd Terry and K-Klass.[20][16][17][18][19]

As a radio presenter, Lempo hosted 'The Lempo & Carr Show' with co-host Jono Carr, weekly on Cheshire FM from 2010 to 2012 and 'The Bitch Show,' weekly on Unity Radio from 2012 to 2014. His 'Twisted Melon' show, which is syndicated on Café Mambo Radio and Data Transmission has been running monthly since November 2014.[21][22][20][4][17][18][19]

On World Heart Day in 2018, Lempo released a charity single titled 'No More' to pay tribute to the British Heart Foundation (BHF) after he had undergone critical heart surgery. The song featured a recording of his post-surgery heart rate monitor. The release was supported by McGuinness' employer at the time McCann. Lempo donated all proceeds to the charity to help fund cardiovascular research in the UK.[2][23][24][18][19]
