Laugardagslögin 2008

Laugardagslögin 2008 was the Icelandic music competition that served as the country's preselection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2008. The competition was organized by RUV between 6 October 2007 and 9 February 2008, and a total of 33 songs participated.

Format

Shows

The contest contained 11 heats with three songs in each, one second chance round and one final, which was held on 23 February 2008. All shows were held at the RUV TV Studios in Reykjavík, hosted by Ragnhildur Steinunn Jónsdóttir and Gísli Einarsson.[1]

Competing entries

RUV invited nine composers to submit three songs for the competition. An additional 146 entries submitted from artists who did not receive an invitation were also considered. The invited composers were:[1]

Weekly heats

The heats were held weekly between 6 October 2007 and 12 January 2008. The winner of each heat decided solely by televoting advanced to the semi-finals.

After each heat there was a separate televote to select one of the two losing songs to advance to the Second Chance Round.[2][3]

Second Chance

After the last heat, an "expert" jury selected 3 of the 11 wildcard qualifiers to compete in the Second Chance round, held on 12 January 2008. The winner decided by televoting advanced to the semi-final.[2][3]

The first semi-final took place on 19 February 2008 and three acts performed. The top two entries decided solely by televoting advanced to the final.

Birgitta Haukdal was unable to perform with Magni Ásgeirsson in the semi-final as she was on holiday.[4][5]

Final

The final was held on 23 February 2008. At the beginning of the show, past Icelandic Eurovision entrants presented a medley of the songs they competed with. This included Paul Oscar's "Minn hinsti dans" (1997), Stjórnin's "Eitt lag enn" (1990), Heart 2 Heart's "Nei eða já" (1992), Silvia Night's infamous 2006 entry "Congratulations" and Selma's "All Out of Luck" (which achieved second place for Iceland in 1999).

The final winner was chosen by televoting and only the top three placings were announced.[6]
