Lanka Premier League
The Lanka Premier League (LPL) is a professional Twenty20 cricket league in Sri Lanka to be contested every year by teams representing Sri Lankan cities from 2020.[1][2] The league was founded by the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) in 2018.[3] Veteran cricketer Russel Arnold was named as the director of Lankan Premier League.[4]

History
Background
Originally, 2018 was going to be the first season of the Lanka Premier League, a professional Twenty20 cricket league established by the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) in 2018. The season, which was supposed to be held from 18 August to 10 September 2018,[5][6][7] but later postponed to possibly next year.[8][9] In April 2019, Sri Lanka Cricket tentatively set the dates of the first tournament to run from 8 to 28 September 2019.[10] In June 2020, Sri Lanka Cricket announced that they plan to hold the tournament in August 2020.[11] The following month, Sri Lanka Cricket confirmed that the tournament would run from 28 August to 20 September 2020.[12] By the end of July 2020, 70 overseas players had shown their interest in playing in the league.[13] However, on 11 August 2020, SLC confirmed that the first edition of the tournament had been postponed until at least the middle of November 2020.[14]

On 9 August 2020, names of the teams were announced.[15]
