Since the first assembly elections in 2000 it has been represented by the Labour Party, firstly by Val Shawcross, and by Florence Eshalomi since 2016.

The elections originally scheduled for 7 May 2020 were delayed for a year due to the coronavirus pandemic in 2020. They will now be held at the same time as the elections previously scheduled for 2021.[1]
