Gameplay

Two-player rhythm gameplay in Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory

Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory is a rhythm action game featuring over 140 songs from the series and its Disney worlds. The game features both single and multiplayer gameplay, with four different game modes, including online battles.[1][2] The gameplay of Melody of Memory has been compared to Theatrhythm Final Fantasy.[3] Traversal between each of the worlds is done through the Gummi Ship, a system used in previous mainline Kingdom Hearts games.[4]

Story

Setting

Melody of Memory visits many of the Disney worlds from past games in the series, including Agrabah (Aladdin), Atlantica (The Little Mermaid), and Wonderland (Alice in Wonderland).[2] Additionally, the game continues Kairi's story from the end of Kingdom Hearts III.[3]

Characters

Over 20 characters from the series are playable in the game,[2] including Sora, Donald Duck, Goofy, Riku, Hercules, and Aladdin.[5]

Development

In January 2020, when discussing the future of the Kingdom Hearts series, creator Tetsuya Nomura revealed that two new development teams were working on Kingdom Hearts content outside of the Kingdom Hearts III Re Mind downloadable content and the mobile game Kingdom Hearts: Union χ Dark Road. He added that one of these games would be "coming out earlier than you would think", with the Re Mind title screen "lay[ing] some of the groundwork for it".[6] In June 2020, Square Enix announced Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory would be coming in 2020 to the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.[4] Melody of Memory will be the first Kingdom Hearts game to release on the Nintendo Switch.[5]

Release

Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory is scheduled to be released on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One worldwide in 2020.[7]
