Starting Mid-April 2014 pro-Russian separatists took control of several towns in Donetsk Oblast.[2][3][4][5] Unknown armed men took control of Khartsyzk city hall on 13 April 2014 and declared it to be part of the so-called Donetsk People's Republic.[6] Since then the city is controlled by this unrecognized state.[7] A pro-Ukrainian unity rally, one of the few at that time in the region,[8] was held in the town on 22 April 2014.[2]
