Background

As Khabar is not an active member of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), the broadcaster requires a special invitation from the EBU to participate in Eurovision events.[2] Khabar was first invited to participate in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in 2018.[3] Channel 31 had previously expressed their ambitions to debut in the 2018 contest, and had sent a delegation to the 2017 contest.[4]

Prior to the 2020 contest, Kazakhstan's highest placing in the contest was in 2019, when the song "Armanyńnan qalma" performed by Yerzhan Maksim placed 2nd with 227 points.[5]

Before Junior Eurovision

Kazakhstan's participation in the 2020 contest was confirmed in June 2020, having been invited to participate by the EBU.[6]

National final

Kazakhstan's national final will take place on 26 September 2020. Twelve songs will participate in the competition and the winner will be selected exclusively by public televoting.[1]

Format

The selection of the Kazakhstani entry will take place in three stages. The first stage will take place on 21 and 22 August 2020 where a jury panel will select 30 entries from the received submissions for the second stage of the competition. In the second stage, an online vote will take place between 24 and 31 August 2020 where 12 finalists will proceed to the third stage, the televised national final, where the winner will be selected.[1]

Competing entries

Artists will be able to submit their entries between 10 August 2020 and 20 August 2020. From all songs submitted, an eight-member jury panel will select 30 songs for the online vote. The jury panel will consist of Bagym Mukhitdenova (music producer), Khamit Shangaliyev (music producer, composer and sound producer), Erlan Bekchurin (music producer), Zhanar Dugalova (singer), Amre (singer), Dinaya (singer), ZaQ (singer) and Indira Edulbayeva (singer).[7]

gollark: Wouldn't a fusion reactor with failing containment... vent several-million-degrees plasma everywhere?
gollark: Solar is kind of nice and all, but storage is a problem and so is having to blanket miles of land in solar panels.
gollark: Comparatively low-hanging.
gollark: Fission is basically good enough and there is loads of low-hanging fruit.
gollark: I think we should just try and switch to nuclear fission power and implement some form of carbon tax.
