Kamal Khan Dam

Kamal Khan Dam (Pashto: د کمال خان بند), is a hydroelectric and irrigation dam project located on the Helmand River in Chahar Burjak District of Nimruz Province in south-western Afghanistan. Construction work on the Kamal khan dam was launched in 1974 but after the death of the Mohammad Daoud Khan president of Afghanistan, work on the dam was stopped.[1]

The hydroelectric plant produces 8 MW of power in addition to providing irrigate more than 174000 hectares[2] hectares of agricultural land.[3] The power plant will produce 9 megawatts of electricity.[4] Iranian government is putting pressure of Afghan government to release water toward Iran.[5]

Phases 1 and 2 of the construction ended in 1966 and 2011.[6] Work on the 3rd phase of the dam began on 19 April 2017 by Afghan President Ashraf Ghani.
