Joseph Thwaites

Joseph Thwaites (c. 1790–1857) was an English trader[1] who served as delegate in The British Commercial Rooms of Buenos Aires.[2] He belonged to the group of British merchants, who had done business in Buenos Aires and Montevideo, between 1810 and 1830.[3]

He was born in London, England, the son Henry Thwaites and Jane Gibson. In 1809 had arrived in the port of Buenos Aires in trade mission.[4] Thwaites was married with Juana Rubio del Rivero, daughter of José Rubio de Velasco, born in Cádiz, and Juana María Ribero Kelly, belonging to a Creole family of Irish and Spanish roots.[5] He settled with his family in the village of Ranchos, where they were owners of several hectares.[6]

His wife's family was linked to the family of Daniel Gowland, a well-known English merchant established in Argentina since 1812.[7]
