Joel Hanley

Joel Hanley (born June 8, 1991) is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman currently playing for the Dallas Stars of the National Hockey League (NHL). Undrafted, Hanley has previously played in the NHL with the Montreal Canadiens and Arizona Coyotes.

Playing career

Hanley was born in Keswick, Ontario. As a youth, he played in the 2004 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with the York-Simcoe Express minor ice hockey team.[1]

Hanley played Junior A with the Newmarket Hurricanes before spending four seasons with the UMass Minutemen ice hockey of the NCAA.[2] Following his college career, he landed his first professional contract with the American Hockey League's Portland Pirates.[2] He spent two seasons (2013–2015) in Portland including a short demotion to the ECHL's Gwinnett Gladiators.[2]

In the summer of 2015, Hanley signed a two-way contract with the Montreal Canadiens organization and reported to the team's AHL affiliate: the St. John's IceCaps.[3] Following a string of injuries to Canadiens' defencemen, Hanley was recalled and played his first NHL game on March 20, 2016. He contributed with his first two assists two days later.[4]

On July 1, 2017, having left the Canadiens as a free agent, Hanley agreed to a one-year, two-way contract with the Arizona Coyotes.[5] In the 2017–18 season, Hanley was initially re-assigned to AHL affiliate, the Tucson Roadrunners. He was later recalled through the Coyotes suffering from injuries to appear in 5 games over the course of the season with the Coyotes.

On July 1, 2018, Hanley as a free agent signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Dallas Stars.[6]
