Javad Hassan

Javad Kuttikaran "Jay" Hassan is an Indian-American technology entrepreneur, millionaire businessman, and chairman of the NeST Group, a multinational conglomerate company.[1][2][3] A former IBM and AMP Inc. executive, Hassan founded the multimillion-dollar NeST Group in 1998 as an outsourcer of electronics manufacturing.[4]

Early life and education

Javad Hassan was born in Alwaye (now Aluva) to a Pathanamthitta agriculturalist, Assanar Nagoor Rawther. He is also the grandson of prominent industrialist and philanthropist, M. K. Mackar Pillay.

Hassan completed his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Kerala[2], and thereafter immigrated to the United States with his wife. After obtaining his bachelor of science degree from Columbia University, Hassan pursued a master's degree from the University of Bridgeport.[5][2][6]

Career

IBM

After graduating from the University of Bridgeport, Hassan was offered an opportunity to pursue a PhD at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.[2] He instead joined IBM as a senior associate engineer.[7] During his career at IBM, Hassan registered 20 patents for his inventions in semiconductor technology.[5][8] When he left IBM in 1988, Hassan was the head of the company's semiconductor operations, overseeing a division of over 2,000 engineers and scientists.[2]

AMP Inc.

In 1988, Hassan joined AMP Inc. as their corporate head of technology. During his time there, Hassan diversified the connector company's operations to make forays into fiber optics and wireless technologies. He transformed the division into a business unit generating over $1.5 billion annually for AMP.

NeST Group

In 1998, Hassan founded the NeST Group with his brother, N. Jehangir.[9][2][10][11][4] NeST was initially an electronics manufacturing outsourcing company, but has since diversified into software, real estate, beverages, healthcare and precision tools.[12]

The company has grown into a multi-national business conglomerate with operations in the United States, the United Arab Emirates, Australia, Japan, and Thailand.[4][2]

In 2016, the Electronic Industries Association of India announced that the NeST Group was that year's largest exporter of electronic goods from India.[13]

Awards

In 2012, Hassan received an honorary doctorate from the New Jersey Institute of Technology. He also served as the commencement speaker that year.[6]

During his career at IBM, he received several Invention Achievement Awards for developing new technologies that were patented by the company.

Family

Javad Hassan's mother, M. M. Khadijoo, was a member of Aluva's prominent Manadath family, and his grandfather, M. K. Mackar Pillay owned the largest lemongrass and cashew export business in India at the time.[14]

Hassan is married and has two daughters.
