Literacy stands at 87.93 percent for men and 75.06 percent for women. 95.45 percent of total population describe their job as the main work, accounting 1739 females in the workforce.

Jalakandapuram is well known for its weaving, especially sarees, which are distributed all over India. Weaving and business is mainly done.

Local festivals reflect Tamil culture and include the Soora samharam festival in November or may be celebrated after Deepavali , Sanjeevi Rayaperumal kovil festivel in September month ,Jalagai Sri Ramalinga Sowdeswari Amman festivals,Yaerikkarai,Paappichettiyur,Malayampalayam Sri Ramalinga sowdeswari Amman temple festivals, the annual Mariamman festivals held in March/April. The town's main industry is weaving on both handlooms and powerlooms; there are booming factories with modern textile machinery and products. Cotton, ragi and cornflowers are all grown here. Dairy farms are also a mainstay of the town's economy,also well developing town too.

There is lake near the yaerikkarai Ramalinga sowdeswari Amman temple and the other adjoining a Kaliamman temple.
