Shepherd has taken time out of Coronation Street to do theatre work, including the role of Riff in a production of West Side Story as part of Stage 84 The Yorkshire School of Performing Arts[2] He has also appeared in Oliver! at Bradford's Alhambra theatre.[3]
In 2008, Shepherd appeared in Ghosthunting with Coronation Street on the Isle of Man.[4]

Shepherd was in a relationship with Lauren Shippey for fifteen years from 2002–2017, and the couple have two children together: a daughter, Nyla, born in 2009 and a son, Reuben, born in 2013. He fathered another child, a son named Greyson; following a one-night stand in 2010. Shepherd has reportedly never met Greyson.[7]
He is well known for his role as David Platt on Coronation Street alongside co-stars Helen Worth (Gail Platt) and Tina O'Brien (Sarah Platt). It has been revealed that Shepherd is being paid £200,000 a year for his role on Coronation Street, a much larger sum than longer-serving co-stars Simon Gregson (Steve McDonald) and Sue Nicholls (Audrey Roberts).
Shepherd is a Leeds United supporter.[8]
