Overview

The Class DB500 was developed to replace ageing Class DE10 diesel-hydraulic locomotives used for shunting duties at smaller freight terminals such as Shimonoseki in Yamaguchi Prefecture.[1] The locomotive has a single water-cooled four-cycle straight six-cylinder diesel engine, with a power output of 184 kW (247 hp), sufficient to haul 500-tonne trains.[1]

History

The Class DB500 entered service at Shimonoseki Freight Terminal from the start of the revised timetable on 4 March 2017.

Classification

The DB500 classification for this locomotive type is explained below.

  • D: Diesel locomotive
  • B: Two driving axles
  • 500: Diesel-hydraulic locomotive
gollark: I mean, outside-view-ishly, life on Earth has existed for several billion years, so the probability (without knowing anything else) of it randomly stopping over the course of some arbitrary thousand or so is... not high.
gollark: > There's nothing that says that life on earth will go on forever. That the environment will not self destruct via CO2 and warming, or any other method.???
gollark: It's ethical™ because journals don't pay the scientists for them anyway.
gollark: You can always just pirate scientific papers!
gollark: Actually, no, it was cold LAST week but is warmer THIS week, thus CLIMATE CHANGE UNDEBUNKED.
