It is one of the twenty Indian Institutes of Management. The Institute became operational in July 2015. The Institute is currently being mentored by Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad.[2] It was inaugurated by Shri Devendra Fadnavis, former Chief Minister of Maharashtra State.[3] The Institute currently offers the two-year Post Graduate Programme (PGP). It was the first among the six new-generation Indian Institutes of Management established by the Government of India in 2015 to begin its operations.[4][5]

Background

A commitment was made by the Government of India in the Budget speech of the Finance Minister in July 2014 to establish five new IIMs in Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha and Punjab. In accordance with the same, the Indian Institute of Management Nagpur was established in Nagpur, Maharashtra on July 23, 2015, with the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad as its mentor institute.

The Indian Institute of Management Nagpur (IIMN) was declared as an Institution of National Importance by the Indian Institutes of Management Act, 2017, enabling it to confer a Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) to students of its flagship two-year Post Graduate Programme (PGP) in Management.

Programmes Offered

Admission Policy

The admission process for the flagship two-year Post Graduate Programme at IIMN takes into account factors such as the candidates’ performance in the Common Admission Test (CAT), past academic performance, work experience and gender and academic diversity. The policy incorporates reservation of seats for candidates as per government norms.

Post Graduate Programme

The flagship academic programme at IIM Nagpur is the fully residential two-year Post Graduate Programme in Management. The programme is designed to create value-driven leaders who are equipped with a strong conceptual foundation and an analytical approach, while retaining touch with the socioeconomic milieu in which they will pursue their calling.

The curriculum for PGP is an eclectic mix of courses that includes various disciplines and functions of management. The first year curriculum involves compulsory courses which provide students with the fundamentals and enables them to understand the interdependencies of systems in an organization. During the second year, students choose from a wide range of elective courses from areas such as Marketing, Strategy, Finance, Information Systems, Economics, Operations Management, Quantitative Methods, Entrepreneurship, Organizational Behaviour, Communication, and Human Resource Management. This enables them to develop their competencies in areas of their interest, thus preparing them to pursue careers in areas of their choosing[6].

The pedagogy comprises classroom sessions, case studies, individual and group projects, simulations, business games etc., to ensure thorough assimilation and retention of concepts. The student experience is further enriched by guest lectures from eminent personalities from industry and academia that expand the horizons of their learning.

In addition to the three terms a year, the PGP also includes a summer internship on completion of the first year and an optional International Immersion in the second year, which together lay the foundation for conceptual and critical reasoning.

International Immersion

Second year PGP students are given the opportunity to obtain a perspective of the global business environment through the International Immersion. Students of IIMN have visited Japan, France, UAE, South Korea and Singapore as part of this optional module[7].

Executive Education Programmes

IIM Nagpur offers a wide range of executive education programmes. Some of these programmes are open-enrolment (open to participants from various organizations), while others are customized to meet the needs of individual organizations.

Placements

The campus recruitment process at IIM Nagpur is headed by the Career Development Services (CDS) office. Over the years, CDS, along with the student-driven placement committee has consistently worked towards making the recruitment process a hassle-free affair for both the recruiters and the students. The scheduling of the selection process, termed as the slot, is indicated to the recruiting organization. The Institute also has a dream slot policy. IIM Nagpur prides itself on being technologically savvy, and has conducted many of the interview processes digitally as well.

The Institute has successfully placed four batches of PGP students with companies from many sectors. Some prominent recruiters are Deloitte Consulting, Amazon, ThyssenKrupp, Mu Sigma, Tata Power, DHL, Genpact, ANZ Bank, Hexaware Technologies, Tech Mahindra, Wipro Digital, TVS Motors, V Guard, Kotak Mahindra, HCL Technologies, L & T, and Sutherland Global[8].

Infrastructure

The Institute currently operates from a transit campus at the Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) Nagpur. The self-sufficient campus in the verdant premises of VNIT houses the academic complex, faculty and administrative blocks, library and e-resource centre, and student hostels. It also consists of a recreational centre, basketball court, green volleyball court, gymnasium and a cafeteria.

Development of the Permanent Campus

In 2018, the Ministry of Human Resource Development approved the construction of a permanent campus for IIM Nagpur, designed to accommodate 600 students. The Institute was granted Rs 379.68 crores for the construction of the first phase of the permanent campus, which covers approximately 60,000 sq.m of the allotted 132-acre plot in the non-SEZ area of the Multimodal International Cargo Hub and Airport at Nagpur (MIHAN).

The Ground-breaking ceremony of the IIMN permanent campus was held on March 06, 2019. Shri Nitin Gadkari, Minister for Road, Highways and Shipping, Govt. of India and Shri Devendra Fadnavis, former Chief Minister of Maharashtra, graced the occasion along with Guardian Minister of Nagpur, Shri Chandrashekhar Bawankule. The ceremony flagged off the first phase of the development of IIMN’s permanent campus.

The construction for Phase 1 began in May 2019. Phase 1 covers approximately 60,000 sq. m of the site, and includes the construction of 23 buildings – including a state-of-the-art academic complex, library, administrative block, student hostels, sports complex and faculty and staff housing. The campus will also house a Management Development Centre for the Institute’s Executive Education Programme (EEP) and IIM Nagpur’s entrepreneurship incubation centre, InFED, in addition to allied infrastructure. The project is expected to be completed in all respects by November 2020.

IIMN Foundation for Entrepreneurship Development (InFED)

Entrepreneurship is an area of strategic focus for IIMN.  Hence a Centre for Entrepreneurship (CfE) is set up to foster research and education in entrepreneurship, and provide services, and incubation for entrepreneurs.  In IIMN’s two-year flagship Post Graduate Programme in management, CfE offers a unique specialization area called Entrepreneurship with Incubation wherein the students get a rare opportunity to learn as well as explore hands-on entrepreneurship.  Further, CfE also set up InFED (IIMN Foundation for Entrepreneurship Development) as a Section 8 Company to offer services and incubation facilities to entrepreneurs.

InFED’s broad objectives are:

  • Mentoring aspiring entrepreneurs, supporting enterprise incorporation and subsequent operations through INCUBATION
  • Providing SERVICES that facilitate day-to-day functioning of incubates
  • Strengthening the start-up ecosystem by creating and disseminating entrepreneurial knowledge through RESEARCH and various EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMES.

With its national reach, InFED is uniquely positioned to impart better inputs to the entrepreneurial community and their practices. InFED creates an enabling ecosystem for entrepreneurs and associated stakeholders in India - connecting entrepreneurs, academia, researchers, knowledge partners, domain experts, industrialists, investors and the government.
