Career

2-year-old-Season

Improbable's first race was on September 29th, 2018, at Santa Anita where he went 3 wide in the final turn after that it turned into a two horse race where he and Stretford End opened up 4 and 1/2 lengths on the rest of the field. But with 100 yards to go Improbable put his head in front and prevailed under urging by a neck. He then picked up his first stakes win in his second race the Street Sense Stakes (Black Type) on November 2nd, 2018 at Churchill Downs. There he stayed mid-pack for most of it but in the stretch took over the lead and then drew off to win by 7 and 1/4 lengths.[2]

The win gained him some notoriety as Justify had won the Triple Crown 3 months earlier and now Improbable's name began to have a double meaning since he was trained and even owned by the same people as Justify and even living in Justify's stall when Justify went to Del Mar[3]. His name new double entendre became more evident when he picked up his first grade 1 win the month after when he won the Los Alamitos Futurity on December 8th, 2018.[4] In the race mimicked his win in the Street Sense staying off the pace before passing Mucho Gusto and drawing away to win by 5 lengths.

3-year-old-Season

He started off the 2019 season with a 2nd place finish at the Grade-2 Rebel Stakes on March 16th, 2019 and a 2nd place finish at the Grade-1 Arkansas Derby on April 13th, 2019.

On May 4th, 2019, he competed in the 2019 Kentucky Derby. He came in at 4:1 odds as the favorite[5] He came in as the 4:1 favorite but finished in 5th. Due to Maximum Security's disqualification, he was moved up to 4th place.[6]

On May 18th, 2019, he competed in the 2019 Preakness Stakes but finished in 6th place.[7] On Augst 25th, 2019, Improbable gained his first win of the 2019 season by winning the listed grade race, the 2019 Shared Belief Stakes.[8] He came in as the 5:2 favorite and took home $100,000 by defeating King Jack by 2 3/4 lengths.[8]

To end the 2019 season, he competed in the Grade-1 Pennsylvania Derby on September 21st, 2019, where he came in 4th and he finished in 5th at the November 2nd, 2019 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile.[1]

He started off his 2020 season on April 11th, 2020 with a 2nd place finish at the Oaklawn Mile Stakes (Black Type) behind Tom's d'Etat.[9]

Improbable then got on a hot streak. He captured the June 6th, 2020 Grade-1 Hollywood Gold Cup Stakes.[10] He came in as the 1:1 favorite and defeated Higher Power for the $300,500 prize. On August 1st, 2020, Improbable won the Grade-1 2020 Whitney Stakes. He came in at 3:1 odds and defeated By My Standards and his rival, Tom's d'Etat.[11]
