ITW David Speer Academy

ITW David Speer Academy (colloquially, Speer Academy) is a public four-year charter high school in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood in Chicago, Illinois. It is a part of the Noble Network of Charter Schools. It is named in memory of David B. Speer, the former Chairman of Illinois Tool Works (ITW), who served the company for 33 years until his death in 2012. The school opened in 2014.

Description

ITW David Speer Academy is Noble’s first STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) campus among its network of 16 campuses. We opened our doors in 2014 to 300 students in the City of Chicago. Speer Academy is focused on preparing students to graduate college with STEM degrees to meet our work force’s demands.

Students are exposed to rigorous college preparatory classes, participate in college courses on a college campus, have access to a state-of-the-art educational and athletic facilities, and more. Our students will have the opportunity to participate in a STEM internship during their senior year with Fortune 500 companies.

Distinguished Teacher Program

In May of 2019, The Noble Network of Charter Schools announced the first 20 recipients of its newly created Distinguished Teacher program.[1] The purpose of the Distinguished Teacher program is to identify, recognize, and reward a select group of Noble teachers who have achieved exceptional results for students at Noble for at least three years and during that time have exemplified the five key questions laid out in the Distinguished Teacher framework.[2] Prior to being selected, candidates participated in a rigorous application process that began in January of 2019, where they first submitted their written narratives along with a portfolio that included comprehensive data. Finalists then participated in classroom observations and debriefs, student surveys, a panel interview, and reference checks.[1][3] Among other benefits, those who are selected to be a Distinguished Teacher receive an annual bonus of $10,000, will help facilitate professional development experiences across the Noble Network as well as participate in the selection of future Distinguished Teachers.[1]

Jamelle Newsome, a Physical Education teacher, was chosen to be a 2018-2019 Distinguished Teacher at ITW David Speer Academy.[1]
