Heuberger
Hejberger, Heyberger, Hoyberger, Hoiberger, Heyperger, Heyberg, Heuberg and von Heuberg are variants of the same surname derived from the surname Heuberger, a Topographic surname of Austrian and Ashkenazi Jewish origin, composed of the Middle High German "höu" (hay) + "berg" (mountain), literally meaning "High Mountaineer". More often than not, those with the surname had an ancestor who lived in a place called Heuberg, of which there are several in both Austria and Germany.[1][2]
Amongst Germans and Austrians
The earliest mention of someone bearing a variant of the surname Heuberger is the noble women Sophia von Heuberg (born c. 1200) who lived in Cologne, Germnay.[3] The second earliest mention is Conrad Heyperger (1271-1318), the progenitor of the noble Heyperger Family.[4] The surname is most common amongst Austrians, many of whom (but not all) descend from the Heyperger Family. Those who do commonly bare the surnames Heyberger, Heyperger, von Heyperger, von Heuberg, Heyberger von Pankirchen and sometimes Heuberger.[1]
Amongst Jews
The surname is also quite common amongst Ashkenazi Jews, many of whom descend from Kalonymos of Heuberg, from whom the family derives the surname. Ashkenazi Jews often bare the surnames Heuberger, Hejberger, Hoiberger, Heuberg and Hoyberger (Yiddish: הויברגר or הויבערגער). [5]
