Other notable Visitors

  • Tom Daley, In May 2009, the 15-year-old Olympic diver, paid a visit to Heolddu to swim with selected pupils to promote the sport. The pupils were selected through the 'healthy eating' ladder, in which pupils gain points for purchases healthy meals. Following the spell in the leisure centre, he attended the school's canteen to also help encourage several pupils to eat healthier. [4]
  • Adam Jones, Ex-Welsh rugby player who played for the Ospreys and the British and Irish Lions.[5]

Controversy

In 2009 the then Head of Law, Colin Moyle received national press coverage when it was found that he had uploaded a number of pornographic videos starring his wife - without her knowledge.[6] In response Mr Moyle went on long-term sick leave before resigning, a Caerphilly county council spokesman said "The disciplinary panel of the school conducted a disciplinary hearing and concluded that had Mr Moyle not resigned he would have been dismissed for gross misconduct."[7]

In 2012 the then Headteacher Philip Jones was accused of "running a dictatorship" and calling teachers the "Taliban", and the NASUWT launched a teachers strike.Mr Jones was placed on Secondment in October 2012 with official resignation in 2013.[8]

gollark: There was also somewhat less carbohydratey stuff (bread/pasta) available for a bit, as far as I could tell.
gollark: (although marmite rice cakes seem to be missing now?)
gollark: People were complaining about supply chain disruption and how clearly everywhere needs to be self-sufficient during the start of the whole people-noticing-COVID-19 thing, but it seems like, on the whole, there was mostly food and stuff around and it got resolved fairly fast.
