History
Matt Tillman, a serial tech entrepreneur, had the idea for a freight and logistics platform in 2014, when he tried to book space on a container vessel to ship a truck. He created a reverse auction over email, treating all freight forwarders the same, and realized that the process could be automated. Tillman met with Jeff Wehner, who had worked in supply chain at Apple and Nest. They concluded that the traditional carrier-forwarder-shipper procurement structure was not the best model for shippers in terms of price discovery and booking. Together with Renee DiResta, they founded Haven Inc.[1][5][6][7]
In the beginning, Haven gave shippers an online platform to compare and reserve container slots from 10 ocean carriers. The company offered 600,000 sailings (or shipment schedules) from 1,500 ports. Haven's strongest demand was coming from the consumer goods, electronics, and high-value agriculture industries of Asia, Europe, and Latin America.[6]
The company surpassed $3.4 billion a year in cargo value in 2016, according to CEO Tillman, who said that Haven's revenue doubled as soon as Donald Trump became the US president, as his protectionist policy caused a spike in the shipping of commodities such as metals because of fears of future tariffs. As of March, Haven worked with 20 of the 25 top ocean carriers and every major freight forwarder.[7] In April, the company introduced a transportation management system to enable shippers to become more efficient in their role as transportation buyers.[8]
Transportation management system
Haven transportation management system, launched in April 2017, is a cloud-based logistics platform for managing large international supply chains. It is intended for ocean freight companies, primarily commodity traders, food suppliers, and consumer goods companies. Shippers can book and track shipments using their own book of carriers and forwarders. They are given direct contact with logistics providers without the need for a middleman or email. The platform helps automate common workflows such as freight booking, rate management, and documentation generation.[9][10][2][11]
