Got to Get It

"Got to Get It" is a song by the German group Culture Beat from their second studio album, Serenity. Written by Nosie Katzmann, Jay Supreme, Torsten Fenslau and Peter Zweier, the song was released as the second single from the Serenity album on 13 September 1993. It was a hit in many European countries, and reached number-one in Belgium and Finland. "Got to Get It" was also a top 5 hit in Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain, Sweden, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. The single entered the Eurochart Hot 100 on 2 October 1993, and peaked at number three. In the US and Canada, it peaked at number-one on the dance music charts.

Critical reception

AllMusic editor William Cooper described the song as "a virtual rewrite" of "Mr. Vain".[1] Ingelill Hatland from Bergensavisen said in her review, that it is one of "the best cuts" of the Serenity album.[2] Also Shawnee Smith, of Billboard reviewed the song favorably, saying that the song sports a "better chorus and aggressive, synth-soaked beats" that their previous single, "Mr. Vain". She goes on to say that the song is a "blend of party-down male rapping and cute female-belting is familiar and fun."[3] Nicole Leedham from The Canberra Times noted Culture Beat's "combination of soul, insightful lyrics and dance floor-friendly music".[4]

Airplay

"Got to Get It" was positioned at number six when the first European airplay chart Border Breaker was compiled due to crossover airplay in West Central-, West-, North West-, North- and South-Europe. The single went on to hit number-one on 21 November 1993, where it stayed for four weeks.[5] It also peaked at number-one on Music & Media's European Dance Radio Top 25 on 20 November 1993.

The music video for "Got to Get it" was directed by Martin Person.[6] It tells the story of two lovers ending their relationship, intertwined with flashbacks to the days when they were in love. The video was filmed in Algarve, Portugal, and in Denmark.
