Geography
Gangapur is located at 25.22°N 74.27°E.[1] It has an average elevation of 495 metres (1624 feet). it was in rule of GWALIOR state before independence. this is Situated on Bhilwara-Udaipur Road, which is a National Highway No:- 758
History
− According to historical evidence, an ancient name of Gangapur was Lalpura, Gangapur is named after the death of Maharani Ganga Bai Scindia. [H.H. Shrimant Akhand Soubhagyavati Maharani Gangabai Raje Sahib Scindia (d. from illness, at Gangapur, May 1792 [2] A very beautiful temple with great architecture is situated here called "Temple of Maharani Ganga Bai Sahib." Maharani came here to solve a dispute between her brother [not real] Maharana Mewar and Devgarh Rao. After the settlement of the conflict, she was going back to Gwalior in the way she died at village LALPURA. Maharana Mewar gifted Lalpura & 12 other villages of Mewar to Gwalior state in memory of Gangabai. Gwalior state built a temple here & gave the new name "GANGAPUR" to village Lal Pura.[3]

Headquarter of the Sahara tehsil, this town is situated at a distance of about 46 km in the South-West of the district headquarters. It was part of the erstwhile princely state of Gwalior (now in M.P.) prior to independence. It is municipal town.
Demographics
As of 2011 India census,[4] Gangapur had a population of 18777. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Gangapur has an average literacy rate of 59%, lower than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 73%, and female literacy is 45%. In Gangapur, 16% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Commonly spoken language of Gangapur is 'Mewari'.
