Frank Nwachukwu Ndili

Professor Frank Nwachukwu Ndili was the 7th Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and served from 1980 until he was succeeded by professor Chimere Ikoku in 1985.[1] He left the office after a long and controversial investigation by the panel of inquiry.[2] However, he is believed to have been forthright even where his predecessor Umaru Shehu (1978-1979) threaded carefully.[3] Prof Frank Nwachukwu Ndili is one of the eminent scientists Nigeria has ever produced. He is not only a scientist, he is a teacher, a top administrator and a positive strategist.

Early life and Education

Frank Nwachukwu Ndili was born on 6th October, 1934 in Delta State, Nigeria. He went to St. Patrick's College Asaba from 1950-1954. He studied at University of Ibadan from 1957-1961. In 1961 he proceeded to University of Cambridge England and graduated in 1964.[4]

Career

Ndili was a Physics lecturer at University of Ibadan from 1964-1968. He was a visiting scientist, International Centre, Trieste, Italy in 1967. He was a Research Fellow, Atomic Energy University of Warsaw, Poland from 1967-1968. Principal Scientific Officer, Daresbury Nuclear Physics Research Warrington, England from 1968-1971. He was also a senior lecturer Physics, University of Nigeria Nsukka, 1971-1973. In 1973, he rose to the Rank of a Reader in Physics. He became the Head of Department of Physics University of Nigeria Nsukka from 1973-1976. In 1976 he became the Dean, Faculty of Physical Sciences University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN). In 1980, he became the Vice Chancellor (VC), University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He served out his tenure as the VC of UNN in 1985. After his tenure, he proceeded to leave of Absence overseas and in 2005 he came back to UNN. [5]

Family Life

Professor Ndili is married to Mrs. Edna O. Ndili, who is an ICON in her own right. The marriage is blessed with six children.
