History

The mall opened in 1974 with original tenants including Sears and Kaufmann's.[3] The Kaufmann's store was the first in the chain to be located in a shopping mall.[4] An original tenant, Zales Jewelers, won a design competition in that chain upon opening.[5]

In 2000, the mall was slightly renovated, while also remodeling the Sears and Kaufmann's stores.[6] Sears closed in 2016, followed by Macy's, which acquired the Kaufmann's chain, in 2017.[7]

JCPenney and Walmart remain as anchor stores. By 2017, the mall was up for foreclosure, even though the mall did not close.[8] A year later, efforts were made by the Jefferson County Port Authority to assist the mall's leasing agent.[9]
