Background and history

Astra was founded in 1921 in Ploiești,[1] while Petrolul was founded three years later in Bucharest as Juventus, following the merger of Triumf and Romcomit.[2] In 1952, the latter moved to Ploiești and changed its name to Flacăra Ploiești accordingly. After 91 years in Prahova County, in September 2012, Astra moved to Giurgiu.

The actual rivalry started in 1998, when Astra promoted for the first time to the first division. Even after its relocation to Giurgiu, the rivalry continued between the governances of the clubs.[3] However, Petrolul fans consider the derby with Rapid București to be the most important one, with Astra not attracting large crowds in neither Giurgiu nor Ploiești.
