Fatal dog attacks in Canada

Fatal dog attacks in Canada are the occurrences of fatalities attributed to dogs during specific years. A 2008 study found that one to two deaths per year in Canada are attributable to dog attacks, however other systematic data is lacking compared to the wider variety of studies conducted by researchers in the United States.[1] In the lists below, the attribution of breed is assigned by the sources.

August 23 Sled dogs (8) A woman and her son 40, 10 The mother and son were picking berries on Zacharias Island, Labrador when eight sled dogs attacked and killed them. [2][5]
December 21 Pack of stray dogs Young boy 8 years The young boy was mauled by a group of stray dogs while he was walking to his home in Cross Lake, Manitoba with food. [2][6][1]

October 13 German Shepherd mix (4) Unnamed male child 3 years The boy was killed by his grandmother's four dogs in Nelson House, Manitoba. The grandmother tried to fend off the dogs but was attacked herself.[11]

July 27 Husky (2) Derian Bird 2 years Bird was killed by two huskies in Hollow Water First Nation, Manitoba.[14]
November 16 Rottweiler, German Shepherd, Mutts (3) Lancelot Corbin Wyatt Loonskin 5 years Loonskin left his house on a reserve near Fort Vermilion, Alberta alone to go outside to play. Neighbours heard several dogs barking and growling and came outside to find Loonskin being mauled. He died of his injuries.[15]

The dogs, which had been aggressive to other community members, were put down because they returned to the scene before the victim's body could be removed.[17]
March 22 Husky (3) Sabock Akpalialuk 4 years Akpalialuk was killed by 3 sled dogs when they escaped from their yard, chased him and mauled him in Pangnirtung, Nunavut. He died from extensive injuries to his neck.[18]
June 7 Husky (2) Unnamed female child 3 weeks The baby was killed by two huskies in her home in Saint-Barnabe-Sud, Quebec.[19]

June 14 Husky Sheena Levina Jenny Uqaituk 4 years Uqaituk was killed by a sled dog in Puvirnituq, Quebec who was chained on a neighbour's property. She was mauled and died from her extensive injuries.[22]

June 6 Northern Dog Unnamed female child 4 years A 4-year-old girl was killed by a dog in Chesterfield Inlet, Nunavut. The dog had not been tied up properly and mauled the girl who died on arrival to the hospital.[25]
June 8, 2016 American Staffordshire Terrier Christiane Vadnais 55 years Montreal - Victim was killed in her own yard by a neighbour's escaped dog that had a muzzle dangling around its neck. The dog had previously bitten two others and was so aggressive its owner kept it muzzled when in his home. DNA testing found the dog to be 87.5% American Staffordshire Terrier. Since it had been illegal in Montreal to acquire pit-bull-type dogs like Staffordshire Terriers, the owner registered it as a boxer.[26] The owner of the dog could have been charged with criminal negligence.[27][28] The victim's sister wrote a book about her sister's life and violent death, and the aftermath, including bullying and threats by pit bull defenders.[29][30]

Andrew Kochut's girlfriend stated the dog had attacked him, but the cause of death was not ruled as a result of the dog bite. The cause of death was not determined as at the date of the article. May 13 Large pack of stray dogs Donnelly Rose Eaglestick 24 years Eaglestick was chased down and attacked while walking home at night through a construction site in Little Grand Rapids, Manitoba. She was severely mauled and had died of her injuries when the body was found the following morning.[33]
September 14 Alaskan Malamute Cameron Mushanski 6 years Killed by grandparents' dog. Dogs later put down.[34]

September 15 Boxer-pitbull cross Lisa Lloyd 50 years According to Strathmore RCMP, the dog attacked a two-and-a-half year-old girl on a farm north of Langdon and just east of Chestermere about 6 p.m., before turning its attention on its 50-year-old owner. The unidentified woman, who police said was the dog’s owner, was in her home when the vicious attack occurred.[35][36]
