From 2008–2011, EFHS maintained "Excelling" status, at the time the highest rank awarded to Arizona's public schools.
Estrella Foothills offers a wide range of academic classes (offered in block scheduling), including honors and AP courses, as well as many diverse electives, including culinary arts, sports medicine, marketing, band, drama, choir, business technology, industrial technology, forensic science, dance, digital photography, multimedia journalism and broadcasting, and the visual arts. The school's CTE classes are part of the joint technological education district West-MEC.
Estrella Foothills also offers several extracurricular activities such as El Lobo, its culinary arts club, National Honor Society, Drama Club and Thespians, Art Club, Music Club, Dance Club, FBLA, Newspaper, Yearbook, FCA, Interact, Science Club, SHPE (including a robotics team), The Pythagorean Society, and The Order of The Wolf. Estrella Foothills opened its performing arts center in August 2008 and performs three shows a year. The theatre program has distinguished itself with multiple state level award-winning performances.
Students are encouraged to be well-rounded and volunteer in community and charitable events. Among these, the Drama Club and SkillsUSA chapter sponsor four blood drives through United Blood Services each year as well as collect pop-tops for Ronald McDonald House Charities. The newspaper sponsors a food drive every October to go to local food banks in the Phoenix metro area and also sponsors a 'Penny War' to raise funds for families in need during the holiday season. The student council groups and several other school organizations also support various charity events.
In sports, EFHS is a member of the 3A Conference of the Arizona Interscholastic Association. The Wolves have distinguished themselves in their twelve years of varsity programs, having sent all of their teams to state playoff competitions at some point. The first state championships came in track and field. The school has also celebrated state championships by their spiritline, girls' soccer, softball, girls' track, tennis and boys' basketball teams. Common sports phrase is “Oh howl yeah!”
