Electro-diesel multiple unit

An electro-diesel multiple unit is a form of passenger rail car, with permanently or semi-permanently coupled carriages, that can be powered either by an external electricity supply (like an electric multiple unit- EMU) or by using an onboard diesel engine (like a diesel-electric multiple unit – DEMU).

SNCF Class B 81500, an example of an electro-diesel multiple unit

Even if its acronym is EDMU, usually is called BMU (bi-mode/bimodal multiple unit).[1]
