As the official journal of the Australasian Professional Society on Alcohol and other Drugs (APSAD), Drug and Alcohol Review is an international meeting ground for the views, expertise and experience of all those involved in studying alcohol, tobacco and drug problems. The Journal examines and reports on alcohol and drug use from a wide range of perspectives, including clinical, epidemiological, psychological and sociological.

Contributors to the Journal examine and report on alcohol and drug use from a wide range of clinical, biomedical, epidemiological, psychological and sociological perspectives. Drug and Alcohol Review particularly encourages the submission of papers which have a harm reduction perspective. However, all philosophies will find a place in the Journal: the principal criterion for publication of papers is their quality.

Authors can submit papers via Manuscript Central and should first read the Author Guidelines.

The Journal publishes seven issues annually (January, February, March, May, July and November).

Drug and Alcohol Review is published by Wiley-Blackwell and the Editor-in-Chief is Robin Room (La Trobe University). According to the Journal Citation Reports, the journal has a 2018 impact factor of 2.789, ranking it 10th out of 35 journals in the category "Substance Abuse".[1]


The journal was established in 1982 as Australian Alcohol - Drug Review, and changed its name to Australian Drug and Alcohol Review in 1986. In 1990, it obtained its current name.[2]
