Department of Regional NSW

The New South Wales Department of Regional NSW is a department of the New South Wales Government responsible for the state's regional issues, building resilient regional economies and communities, strengthening primary industries, managing the use of regional land and overseeing the state’s mineral and mining resources.[2]

The department was established on 2 April 2020 to coordinate support for communities, businesses and farmers hit by the recent bushfires, floods and COVID-19 crises.[3] It assumed the functions of the Regions, Industry, Agriculture and Resources division from the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment.[4] It also brought together Department of Primary Industries, Local Land Services, Resources and Geoscience and regional coordination across the government.[1]

The department will have four offices, located at Queanbeyan, Armidale, Dubbo and Coffs Harbour.[5] The department also administers the Department of Primary Industries (DPI), whose head office is in Orange.

Structure

The Department is the lead agency in the Regional NSW cluster, led by the secretary, presently Gary Barnes,[1] who reports to the following ministers:[6]

Ultimately the ministers are responsible to the Parliament of New South Wales.

The following agencies are included in the Regional NSW cluster, administered by the Department:[6][7]

  • Local Land Services
  • Forestry Corporation of NSW (state-owned corporation)

The department also administers the Department of Primary Industries.
