Daniel Newman served one term as a Manukau City councillor, representing Manurewa from 2007 to 2010.[1][2][3] He was originally a member of the Labour Party, leaving the organisation in his twenties[4]

Following the 2010 Local Government Elections, Newman became the inaugural chairperson of the Manurewa Local Board.[5]

In December 2012, Newman resigned his positions on the Manurewa Local Board and the Wiri Licensing Trust.[6]

At the 2016 Auckland elections, Newman was elected to the Manurewa-Papakura ward of Auckland Council, outpolling Cr Sir John Walker and defeating incumbent Calum Penrose. He was one of only two candidates to win election by defeating an incumbent councillor in 2016. He made his maiden council speech on 2 November 2016.[7][8]

gollark: That's the help text for it.
gollark: ```Eggs and hatchlings can become sick when they receive too many views, unique views, and clicks in a short period of time. Although sickness can occur at any time, eggs are most vulnerable when first laid. If an egg or hatchling continues to receive too many views, unique views, and clicks while sick, it may die.To “cure” an egg or hatchling of sickness, simply reduce the rate at which it is receiving views, unique views, and clicks. This may be as simple as removing the egg or hatchling from any sites you have posted it on. Since the hide action prevents eggs and hatchlings from receiving views, unique views, and clicks, it can be a useful tool at combating sickness.```
gollark: Oh? I thought it was good.
gollark: Well, you partly were, but whatever.
