His father, Jeff DeHaan, is a computer programmer, and his mother, Cynthia Boscia, is an executive at Metlife.[3] He has an older sister, Meghann,[3] and had what the New York Times Magazine has described as a "very normal, super-supportive childhood."[5] He attended Emmaus High School in Emmaus, Pennsylvania, for three years and appeared in community theater. He switched to the University of North Carolina School of the Arts for his senior year of high school, where he was "around artists for the first time."[5][6] He continued at UNCSA for undergraduate studies, graduating in 2008.[7]
Career
DeHaan got his start on stage as understudy for Haley Joel Osment in the short-lived Broadway revival of American Buffalo. In 2008, he made his television debut, guest-appearing on an episode of Law & Order Special Victims Unit, and his 2010 feature film debut in John Sayles' Amigo. He played Jesse in the third season of In Treatment and played Timbo in the fourth season of True Blood.[8]
In 2012, DeHaan starred in the camcorder drama film Chronicle, and as Cricket in Lawless. In 2013, he played Lucien Carr, a contemporary of Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac, in Kill Your Darlings, alongside Daniel Radcliffe. It was a role for which he has received critical acclaim.[9] He was the cover star of Hero magazine issue 10, shot by Hedi Slimane and published in October 2013.[10] In 2014, Annie Leibovitz photographed DeHaan for a Prada clothing "men’s spring advertising campaign".[11] Also that year, he played Harry Osborn, in The Amazing Spider-Man 2[2] and Zach Orfman in Life After Beth.
In 2015, DeHaan starred as James Dean in the drama Life, opposite Robert Pattinson as photographer Dennis Stock. In September 2015 Dehaan was the cover star of Another Man issue 20, shot by Willy Vanderperre.[12] DeHaan then played Roman in the 2016 independent drama film Two Lovers and a Bear.
In 2017, DeHaan starred in Luc Besson's science fiction film Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, with Cara Delevingne, based on the French comics series Valérian and Laureline.[13] He also starred in the 17th-century romance Tulip Fever.
In July 2017, it was announced that Vincent D'Onofrio would be the director of a new western film The Kid,[14] starring DeHaan in the role of Billy the Kid and costarring Ethan Hawke.[15][16]
Appearances in other media
DeHaan played a fictional version of himself in the music video for Imagine Dragons' song "I Bet My Life".
Personal life
DeHaan married actress Anna Wood in a private ceremony on June 30, 2012. The two have been together since 2006 and both appeared in Chronicle.[17] They live in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. They have a daughter, born in 2017, and a son, born in 2020.[18][19]
