Plot

Haley (Sarah Hyland), Alex (Ariel Winter), and Luke (Nolan Gould) are devastated when Phil (Ty Burrell) announces to them that Claire (Julie Bowen) will take her responsibilities at Jay's company as the new boss. Actually, Claire wants to toss the family's old items; but Phil and Luke disagree with that and try without success to save them. Claire has a change of heart when she hears an old teddy bear after she threw it in the garbage. She soon regrets her decision; but Phil reassures her when he shows her a garage full of their old possessions, proving that he didn't get rid of them. He also gets back the teddy bear, which gets on the family's nerves and is forced to "kill it", much to his annoyance.

While Alex is cleaning her room, she finds an old sweater which is Sanjay's. She and Haley go to Sanjay's house to return his sweater; and Alex is still mad after their break-up. But when Sanjay truly apologizes to Alex, it's Haley who believes him which allows her younger sister to have a second chance.

Elsewhere, Jay (Ed O'Neill) and Gloria (Sofía Vergara) are enjoying the former's retirement. But Jay does not want to stay inactive and decides to take a flying lesson. Gloria's nightmares about Jay inspire Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) to go with Jay to his flying lesson. As the two of them are in the plane with the instructor, Jay accidentally knocks the instructor out; but soon regains consciousness as they fear for their lives.

Gloria searches for a new hobby as Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) suggests she should find a common interest she could share with Jay. She asks him to teach her everything he knows about golf. Mitchell proves to be a terrible coach and is very disappointed when both Gloria and Lily (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons) fire him as a coach and replace him with a real instructor for Gloria and Manny (Rico Rodriguez) who will become Lily's flute personal coach. At the end of this episode, both Jay and Gloria admit that they tried a different hobby in order to be close to each other which resulted in proving that they really loved each other.
