The genus was formally described by German entomologist Willy Ramme in 1940.[3] It is placed in the tribe Phlaeobini in a 2014 checklist of Vietnamese Orthoptera, although as of December 2018 the Orthoptera Species File has not assigned it to a tribe.[1][4] The holotype is a male Chlorophlaeoba tonkinensis tonkinensis from Vietnam.[3][5]

Chlorophlaeoba is similar to the genus Phlaeoba. In contrast with Phlaeoba, the head of Chlorophlaeoba substantially pointed, as long or longer than the pronotum, and the species have an olive green coloring.[3][5]
