Charles H. Baxter

Charles Henry Baxter (November 15, 1841 – ?) was a Captain in the Union Army during the American Civil War and served at the battles of Shiloh and Vicksburg, and later a member of the Wisconsin State Senate.

Biography

Born in Stillwater, New York, Baxter moved to Grant County, Wisconsin in 1857. During the American Civil War, Baxter served with the 25th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment, the 41st Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment and the 47th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment of the Union Army. He eventually reached the rank of captain.[1] Returning from the war, Baxter entered into business with George Howe of Lancaster, Wisconsin, and built a broad general merchandise business, also dealing in lumber, coal, and livestock.[2]

Political career

Baxter was a member of the Wisconsin Senate from 1893 to 1900. Additionally, he was Mayor and a member of the City Council of Lancaster in 1888;[3] a member of the Grant County Board of Supervisors; Chairman of the Grant County Republican Committee and a member of the Wisconsin State Republican Committee.
