The team was introduced as a part of new domestic structure by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on 31 August 2019.[1]

On 3 September 2019, PCB confirmed squad for the team.[2] Babar Azam was announced captain of the team.[3] Ahmed Shehzad was announced vice captain of the team.

Central Punjab team won the 2019 season of Quaid-e-Azam Trophy after defeating Northern by an innings and 16 runs in the final.[4] In the victory of this tournament the main role of Vice Captain Ahmed Shehzad. He led his team throughout the tournament and qualified for the final with his leadership skills and batting skills but when Team reached in the final Babar Azam had returned from national duty then captaincy handover to him for the final. Indeed it was right of Ahmed Shehzad but it's decision of team management. In that final team loft the trophy and become champion of Quid e Azam trophy.

Babar remained captain of the team for 2019–20 National T20 Cup. They won only one match in the tournament and were knocked out in the group stage. In that only single victory vice captain Ahmed Shehzad played a vital role. He smashed a magnificent hundred and took his team at the target.
