History

The Canton Citizens came into existence when the Vincennes Velvets of the Mississippi–Ohio Valley League moved to Canton on June 7, 1952. The Canton Chinks (1908–1913) had preceded the Canton Citizens decades earlier. The 1952 Vincennes Velvets/Canton Citizens had no major league franchise affiliation. The team is also listed as being called the "Aces" in some references. The team finished 39–54 in Canton and 56–68 (630 runs, 696 runs allowed) overall.[2][1] Edward Gilde hit .303 with 90 RBI and McPherson Crum had 12 wins and 119 strikeouts to lead the team in 1952.[2][3]

Notable alumni

No players/coaches on the Canton Citizens roster advanced to the major Leagues.

The ballpark

The 1952 Canton Citizens played at Canton Athletic Park. The Canton Athletic Park is still in use and is located at 900 First Avenue Canton, Illinois.[4][5]
