Brandon Stirling Baker

Brandon Stirling Baker (b.1987) is an American lighting designer working internationally in ballet, opera and theatre.[1]

His lighting can be seen in the repertories of New York City Ballet,[2], American Ballet Theatre, Miami City Ballet,[3] San Francisco Ballet, Dutch National Ballet, Hong Kong Ballet, Berlin Staatsballet, Joffrey Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Houston Ballet, Boston Ballet, Semperoper Ballet Dresden, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Cincinnati Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet and Opera Philadelphia.[4]

Mr. Baker is a graduate of the California Institute of the Arts[5] and studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama in Glasgow, Scotland[6]

In 2019, Baker received the prestigious Knight of Illumination Award (KOI-USA) for his lighting of Justin Peck's Reflections.[7]

The Choreography of Light Project

In 2018 Baker developed a new ballet inspired by light at the Center for Ballet and the Arts at NYU[26], a research facility in New York City dedicated to the research and development of artists working in dance. [27] The ballet featured new choreography by Jamar Roberts of Alvin Ailey and was performed by Patricia Delgado formerly of the Miami City Ballet. [28]

In 2019 the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum Works & Process series commissioned Baker with a special program “The Choreography of Light” dedicated to his work as a lighting designer for ballet.[29] The New York Times featured Brandon Stirling Baker's work as a special profile in the January 2019 Arts and Leisure section. In light of the time Project

In 2020, Baker conceived and co-curated a light-and-sound installation at the Kaatsbaan Cultural Park in Tivoli, New York on a farm that belonged to Eleanor Roosevelt’s grandparents. In light : of the time considers the realities of police violence and the impact of COVID-19 especially on minorities, with a series of images projected onto the interior surfaces of a barn designed by famous architect Stanford White. The installation premiered August 1st, 2020, featuring the work of Jamar Roberts, Hope Boykin, Carl Hancock Rux and Alan C. Edwards. [31][32]
