Nițchidorf (German: Nitzkydorf; Hungarian: Niczkyfalva) is a commune in Timiș County in the Banat region of Romania.

Geography

It is located in the southwest of Romania, at 30 km (19 mi) from Timișoara. Nițchidorf has 1,599 inhabitants (2005), and a total area of 64.13 km2 (24.76 sq mi). The commune is composed of three villages: Blajova (Balázsd), Duboz (Temesdoboz) and Nițchidorf.

History

It was first mentioned in 1784. The commune was named after its founder, count Kristóf Niczky. Historically, it was inhabited mostly by German-speaking Banat Swabians, most of whom abandoned Romania in the 1980s. Ioan Mașcovescu of the Social Democratic Party has been mayor since 2004.
