Concept and style

Black Magic; All Mysteries Revealed is said to be loosely based on the novel Master and Margarita by Russian author Mikhail Bulgakov.[2] Speaking in an interview, Year Long Disaster frontman Daniel Davies explained that the band was influenced by the book's themes of "good and evil, spiritual and material" when writing the songs on the album.[3]

Critical reception

Media response to Black Magic; All Mysteries Revealed was mixed. Gregory Heaney of AllMusic suggested that the album is better than its predecessor, 2007's Year Long Disaster, describing its sound as "darker and heavier" than the self-titled release.[4] Heaney noted that "the songs feel less rushed, giving them the relaxed and confident demeanor of a band that's starting to come into their own as songwriters", highlighting tracks including "Major Arcana" and "Show Me Your Teeth".[4] Punknews.org's review of the album was less positive, claiming that the band's music "lack[s] depth"; the reviewer did, however, admit that "the band is at least good at what they do".[5]

gollark: I didn't say it was proof, just that it wasn't disproof.
gollark: <@221827050892296192> Those are just maths. There are no *actual* circles to infinite precision in the real world. We just know that the abstract idea of circles and whatnot follows those rules, and matches real-world ones fairly well in most situations.
gollark: Good short story about that: https://qntm.org/responsibility
gollark: I think it's not very productive to try and reason about the desires of the hypothetical simulation-running beings when they're not (necessarily) anything like humans and when the only information we have to work with is our universe.
gollark: <@498244879894315027> It's unfalsifiable. You can't prove we're *not* in a simulation.
