Benito Juarez (conductor)

Benito Juarez de Souza (17 November 1933 3 August 2020) was a Brazilian conductor. Juarez was committed to making classical music accessible to Brazilians.

Juarez was born in Januária, Minas Gerais, in 1933. He founded CORALUSP in 1967, the choir of the University of São Paulo and Banda Sinfônica do Exército, the military symphony orchestra, in 2002. He was also for 25 years artistic director and conductor of the symphony orchestra of the municipality of Campinas: Orquestra Sinfônica Municipal de Campinas.[1][2]

He died in São Paulo on 3 August, 2020, in the nursing home where he lived. The mayor of Campinas issued a three-day mourning period in the city.[1]
