Ordained in 1912,[6] his first post was as a Curate at St Jude's, Salterhebble.[7] He was a Lecturer at St Augustine's College, Canterbury from 1913 to 1922.[8] He was Chaplain of Selangor[9] from 1922 to 1927[10] when he became Bishop of Singapore,[11] a post he held until 1940. The following year he became Warden of St Augustine's[12] and an Assistant Bishop of Canterbury (both until 1955).[5]
