Balakrushna Das

Sangeeta Sudhakara Balakrushna Dash was a veteran Guru of Odissi music.[1] He worked variously as a vocalist, composer and music director. He received Sangeet Natak Academy Award in 1984 from Ministry of Culture of India.</ref>/https://sangeetnatak.gov.in/sna/citation_popup.php?id=1198&at=2

He also received the Odisha Sangeet Natak Academy award in 1975-76 for Odissi Vocal.[2] He was an Odissi classical music teacher on Odissi Research Centre of Cultural department (Govt of Odisha)[3]

Balakrushna Das started his music career as a singer of Odissi, Bhajan and Chhandas at AIR, Calcutta in the year 1944. Later he started working as music director in films. His first film as a music director was Kedar Gouri in 1954. He directed music in 20 films and hundreds of non-film albums including Odissi, Drama, Theatre and music programs for the AIR, Cuttack.[4][5]

Biography and Achievement

Shri Bala Krushna Dash was born at Basantapedi in Orissa in 1928. He received his initial training in Odissi music from Guru Gokulchandra Srichandan. Later, he further received training in Odissi music under the guid- ance of Shri Khitish Chandra Moitra and also learnt Hindustani vocal music from the renowned Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. Under the guidance of Shri Rai Chand Boral he was initiated into the art of composition and orchestration of Indian music. He has over 200 gramophone discs to his credit. He has won appreciation as a music composer for a variety of theatrical presentations and also for Oriya films. Shri Dash has conducted extensive research in the field of Oriya music. He has been acclaimed for his rendition of Jayadeva’s Ashtapadi and other song forms of Orissa. Shri Bala Krushna Dash has been honoured by many organisations of Orissa includ- ing the State Akademis and the Government of Orissa. For his eminence in the field of Music and his contribution to its enrichment, Shri Bala Krush- na Dash receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Odissi Music for 1984.
