Biju Patnaik University of Technology

The Biju Patnaik University of Technology ( BPUT ) with its head-quarters in Rourkela, Odisha came into being in November 2002 through an act of the Government of Odisha. The main objective of instituting the University was to ensure a high quality of students coming out of the technical colleges through a common curriculum and uniform evaluation. Today, the University has 137 colleges, both constituent and affiliated, with around 100,000 students. The disciplines include engineering and architecture, business management, computer studies and pharmacy. Several of these offer both undergraduateand post graduate studies.[2]

Location

The university is functioning in its new campus at Chhend Colony, Rourkela, about 7 km from Rourkela railway station, Odisha, India. Rourkela is well connected by road and railway with Bhubaneswar, Sambalpur, Kolkata, Mumbai and other cities of India. The nearest airports are Ranchi and Jharsuguda.

Colleges

When Biju Patnaik University of Technology was established, only five colleges were in Odisha (Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology, Sarang founded in 1982; Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology, Burla founded in 1956; College of Engineering and Technology, Bhubaneswar founded in 1981; Odisha School of Mining Engineering (renamed as Government College of Engineering), Keonjhar founded in 1956;and Central Institute of Plastic Engineering and Technology, Bhubaneswar founded in 1968). A few other private engineering and management institutes which were under Sambalpur University, in Odisha.

Later two Management colleges were added Institute of Management and Information Technology, Cuttack in 1962 and College of IT and Management Education, Bhubaneswar in 2000.

In 2009 three new government Engineering colleges were added Parala Maharaja Engineering College, Berhampur, International Institute of Information Technology, Bhubaneswar and Government College of Engineering, Kalahandi.

The university has more than 110 colleges, both constituent and affiliated, with around 58,000 students. The disciplines include engineering and architecture, business management and hotel management, computer studies and pharmacy. Several of these offer undergraduate and post graduate studies.

Campus

Biju Patnaik University of Technology campus is in Chhend, Rourkela.

Chhend Campus, Rourkela

Rourkela campus is in Chhend. Earlier, temporarily it was functioning in UGIE campus, Rourkela. Officially Chhend is the main campus. Almost all administrative work, Foundation Day celebration and convocations are done in Rourkela.

Center for Advanced Post Graduate Studies

Biju Patnaik University of Technology has a post graduation institute of its own – Center for Advanced Post Graduate Studies. It is in the southern part of its Chhend campus. It has 17 disciplines:
