History

The house was built in 1706 as imperial salt chamber. According to its time of origin it shows many baroque features. Aisles, exhibition space and some other rooms have cross-vaulted ceilings. Where the outside walls are built on the former city walls they are up to two meters thick. As the building is a listed building, the renovation, which was completed in 2009, focused on the best possible preservation of the original building fabric. The original stucco ceilings and wooden floorboards were retained in many rooms. The beam construction of the roof truss was also taken over unchanged. The ground plan of the complex resembles the lower case letter "h". The total usable area is 1400 m². A basement was installed to house the building services and sanitary facilities.

The Studio House

In the course of being the European Capital of Culture in 2009, the Salzamt was bought and renovated by the City of Linz and converted into small apartments and studios for visual artists. The Atelierhaus Salzamt is a meeting place for young visual artists from inland and abroad. A total of nine studios are available for use. Four international scholarship holders are each provided with a small apartment and their own studio free of charge for a maximum period of two months. In addition, international guest artists receive a monthly stipend to cover living costs. Studios and apartments are also rented out to the Province of Upper Austria, University of Art and Design Linz and Ars Electronica. Four further studios without accommodation are given biennially and free of charge to local artists. In order to document the international artistic exchange and to make it accessible to a wide public, the works of the artists in residence are presented at Salzamt as part of the exhibition program. In the 170m² exhibition space, located on the ground floor, exhibitions, lectures, discussions, presentations and screenings take place. Some artists are involved in various Linz based projects during their stay as well.
