Etymology

Allerby was originally called "'Ailward's', that is 'Æðelward's, Crosby', afterwards reduced to 'Ailward's bȳ'."[1] So, "the village or hamlet of Ailward". ( is Old English from the Old Norse býr, meaning 'village' or 'hamlet'.)
